National Minimum Wage Increase

The Government has announced the annual increase to the National Minimum Wage. The adult rate will rise from £5.52 to £5.73. The rate for 18-21 year olds will also increase from £4.60 to £4.77, while the 16-17 year old rate will rise from £3.40 to £3.53.

All increases will take effect on 1st October 2008.

A potentially controversial point is that the increase, 3.8%, is above the current rate of CPI inflation, but below the rate of RPI inflation — currently 4.1 percent — on which most wage deals were based.

Another area of potential contention is that younger employees get less than older staff ~ Age Discrimination? Watch this space!
